In order to increase awareness and enjoyment and to further the art and craft of gilding, the Society of Gilders proudly presents regional classes, lectures and workshops by a group of talented, qualified teachers.

Notes about class schedule and registration:

  • All dates listed are inclusive.
  • Please contact instructor if you need additional information. However, you must register for classes through SOG: 888-991-7676 (toll free) or (education@societyofgilders.org).
  • All class fees include a registration fee payable to the Society of Gilders. This fee is $35.00 (members) or $85.00 (non-members).
  • Full payment must be made 21 days prior to start of class.
    Early registration is suggested because classes will be cancelled three weeks prior to the commencement of the class, if the minimum number of students has not been met.  Students will be contacted by e-mail regarding the status of the class.  Cancellations by the teacher will result in a full refund.
     An $85.00 Cancellation fee will be charged for any cancellations made by the student within three weeks of the start of  the class.
  • 'Class size': the first number is minimum number of students, the second is the maximum.
  • Once a class begins, no refunds will be given. If days are missed due to illness, family emergencies, or other hardship, the student is allowed to make up the lost class time at a future class for no extra fees.  Once the material/tool boxes are opened the student must pay for them.

The class is for anyone who is interested in water gilding and wants to learn more to improve their skills. The object we will gild will be a Florentine picture frame. Students will learn to prepare rabbit skin glue, chalk gesso, bole, gilding liquor and toners. These materials will be applied as a demonstration and each student will work on his/her own frame. Gold leaf will be handled and we will learn how to gild out of a book of gold leaf. We will discuss various techniques and open up discussions about other types of gilding options. Students may use their own tools and supplies, or purchase a supply kit. Students should be dressed for working in a studio.

Working with Dutch metal, aluminum, copper and silver leaf, members of the class will experiment with mat and broken leaf techniques, double gilding, inlays, distressed finishes, and flash gilding with mica powders and other effects.

This class will cover both the basic steps of reverse painting and gilding on glass as well as more advanced Eglomise skills. The use of multiple metals, along with more complex decorative paint finishes and techniques will be explored, Students can bring their own design ideas to use towards a piece of work.
