We would like to gild 50 individual stainless steel panels approximately 100"x30" located on the roof a building. They can only be gilded on site.

What's the recommended method for gilding in outdoor conditions where there is a high probability of rain, wind and cold weather?

Would we need to erect a protective structure, and if so, if we needed to control the humidity and temperature, how would you suggest doing that? Or is there a combination of size and gold we can use without needing a structure?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions/advice!

Mary, Have you done any gilding before?  If not, I suggest that you contact an experienced gilder to do this job.

From the size of this project there will be quite an expense.  I would not want to be the person responsable for the cost of materials (at least 23.5k gold).

Yes - to the question of having the area tented to control wind and rain.  Gilding is also normally done in warm weather as any forced air heating will cause problems with gold leaf control.

There are several experienced architectural gilders among the group who can give you more detailed information.
