How do I clean surface stains on a gilded wooden icon?

This icon is housed in a small chapel and may have been exposed to some moisture. I am concerned with mold and mildew types of stains. The least chemicals used would be better.
Thank you.

Ximena,

Cleaning early icons is very difficult work as you are most likely dealing with several different mediums. I am going ask a couple of our other members to get into this conversation as well.

Ximena,
Cleaning, treating or consolidating the surfaces of gilded works, such as icons, frames etc, is carried out by people who spend years to aquire the skill and knowledge to be competent. I know its very tempting to save money by doing these things yourself, but one mistake could cause serious damage. I expect this icon is important and meaningful to you. I suggest that you hire a professional who is skilled in both painting conservation and gilding conservation. If you are interested, you might consider taking some classes with the sog, you will discover how much skill and effort is involved in the making of this type of work. You may never become a gilder,  but you will appreciate you icon more than ever. If you require more information, feel free to call me, my info. can be found under members.    Michael Gilbert
