It started with an idea listed in a chapter of business ideas in a how-to-start-a-business book-learn how to gild with gold leaf. I had worked several years in retail custom framing primarily working in production cutting mats, mounting and framing art. The high-end 22kt gold leaf frames piqued my fascination. I knew nothing of how gold leaf was put on nor had I ever seen a sheet of gold leaf, but the seed was planted. I wanted to work with this beautiful medium.
An opportunity serendipitously came my way after being laid off. One day after two months of job hunting, I opened the want ad section in the Chicago Tribune-an ad for a company looking for a gilder or the right candidate to willing to learn. I called the phone number and learned the company was world renowned harp manufacturer Lyon&Healy Harps. They hired me and I learned how to gild harps in genuine gold leaf. It changed my life. I eventually ventured into self-employment specializing in restoring antique gold harps. Then I began writing about gilding and teaching. The experience has been surprisingly gratifying. The gilding arts has been my passion for over 25 years. I feel proud and grateful working with this medium.

Elizabeth Holt is a freelance gilder and restorer of gilded objects located in New Orleans, Louisiana. She specializes in restoring antique picture frames. As recipient of the 2007 Watin Gilding Prize, an exchange sponsored by the French-American Cultural Foundation and the Society of Gilders, Elizabeth enjoyed a three-month internship learning centuries-old water gilding recipes and techniques with Atelier Maury in Paris, France.
While employed by a local art restoration company, she accrued over 10 years training and experience in both water and oil gilding restoration. During the past two years as a freelance gilder, Elizabeth has worked with antique dealers, historical collections, museums, galleries, and private collectors.
Elizabeth Holt joined the Society of Gilders in 2005, and is currently transitioning to be the Education Chair. She can be contacted via email at LaDoreuse@gmail.com, or visit her “La Doreuse” Facebook page.
Rachael Linton is a New Zealand-born artist living in the UK. She works as a gilder laying pure gold leaf on frames, furniture, and fine art, as well as interior and exterior architecture. As a sole trader, under the name Tilia Gilding, she works on a commission basis restoring and creating all manner of gilt objects from her studio in Wimbledon, London. Using traditional water-gilding and oil-gilding techniques, achievements include gilding the Queen’s robing room at Westminster Palace, gilding the Cutty Sark, and teaching at the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.
Rachael became a gilder in 2013. During her Master’s degree in Digital Media Artistry & Design (2008), she researched the ways in which electromagnetic frequencies interact with the human body to produce therapeutic outcomes. Since gold, silver, and copper conduct energy and have many therapeutic uses within the body, she began applying gold and other precious metals to her artworks and voilà, she was hired by a renowned furniture maker as a gilder.
Freelancing brings Rachael the opportunity to keep working on projects that mean something to her. As an environmentally aware and health-conscious creative, she is well known for her thought-provoking interactive art installations that explore the alchemical balance between man and matter using pure gold, light, and sound resonance.
A visionary at heart, Rachael contributes to the art world with lustre, uniting history with the present and art with science. She is fascinated by watching what happens when we allow time and space for nature to do its magic, allowing patina and decay to seed into objects which we consider valuable and precious.

By trade I am a gilder, frame maker, and gilded object conservator.
In my personal creative outlets I often incorporate the skills of my trade into the artwork I produce. I work in analog, alternative, and pinhole photography. And I work in egg tempera and carved and gilded surfaces.
Gilded surfaces were traditionally used to attract available light in pre-electricity times. Used to adorn picture frames, burnished gold leaf would bring any available light in to illuminate the artwork it housed.
In my work, I use gilded surfaces to create reflective surfaces. I have been exploring the use of reflective surfaces in abstract creations to attract light and to reflect pattern and texture to the viewer to create illusions
