About the class:

Learning classical French réparure (gesso engraving and carving) on 17th century motifs, and how to execute them using the proper tools.

The student will learn about the evolution of Reparure, the different carving irons used, and how to hold them while working.
The student will be working on a stucco ornament cast made from the restored old harpsichord’s body dated from the Louis xv period (1723-1774).

1 – How to engrave the traditional background 8 motifs:

  • Berclay, LOUIS XIII;
  • Simple fool’s play LOUIS XIV (a diamond pattern evoking the pattern of Harlequin’s costume);
  • Double fools’ play, LOUIS XIV;
  • Barley seeds (« Grains d’orge ») LOUIS XIII – XIV – Régence – LOUIS XV;
  • Curve pattern, LOUIS XIII, LOUIS XIV, Régence, LOUIS XV, LOUIS XVI;
  • Straw pattern;
  • Amaties;
  • Damier pattern (a pattern evoking a checker board).

2 – How to carve gesso : the curves and the “refends” (spaces within—and part of—the ornaments).

In order to practice the techniques taught in this course the student will have to choose one panel of their choice. Your panel option is included in your class price.

Each panel has been prepared by Bruno in advance, with 12 layers of gesso on both sides, so that they are ready to work the reparure. (engraving and carving )

Panel option 1: The Harpsichord design 
This includes the premade panel and all other material (irons non included) such as

  • Pencil, paper, carbon paper, tracing paper
  • Sand paper 3M : 220 , 400 one leaf of each

This panel design will be premade by Bruno and will be provided for the class. (stucco cast ornament made from the restored old harpsichord’s body Louis xv period (1723-1774))

Panel option 2: The Rosace design 
This includes the premade panel and all other material (irons non included) such as

  • Pencil, paper, carbon paper, tracing paper
  • Sand paper 3M : 220 , 400 one leaf of each

This panel design will be premade by Bruno and will be provided for the class.


Material requirements:


The student must have irons to take the class  

There are 2 options

  1. Option #1. The student has their own irons and must bring them to the class.
  2. Option #2: the student can buy a set of 10 irons for $330. Available for purchase with class registration.

These irons are custom made and forged in France and supplied at Laverdure in Paris. Your set of Iron will be then assembled by Bruno in his studio before shipping it to you.

Bruno Toupry is the founder of Atelier du Nombre D’or at Paris. He’s a master artisan

recognised by the city of Paris.

Over the years his specialised work blossomed into an expertise in creating

luxuriously decorated surfaces of many kinds, from traditional and contemporary works of arts such as harpsichord decoration or murals interiors. Bruno teaches for 20 years and loves to share extensively about his expertise.
