Peter Miller will host our special guest conservator and gilder Randy Wilkinson of Fallon Wilkinson for a lecture via Zoom – “Identifying Wood Species on Gilded Frames”
Identifying Wood in Gilded Objects
“There are those that go to an art gallery to look at the paintings. If you are a glider by trade, you see the frames. But sometimes, I miss both and wonder what the wood is that is under the gilding.
In this short introduction to identifying wood used in historic frames, I will briefly share my background on how and why I think wood identification is important. I’ll talk about the language problems we face describing the woods we see. I will also discuss the differences between hardwood and softwood anatomy and share some case studies that I have identified the wood used in some historic frames. Finally, I will discuss sampling, sample size, and the basic process of identification.”
